From “Why?” to “Why Not?” – The Question that Defines Leader

Dare to Think Big. Every person who dares to dream big, every innovator, and every leader encounters the nay sayers, the doubters, the negative people who ask questions to drag you back and pull you down.

The Nay Sayers Ask. Why do you think you can succeed? Why attempt something that no one else has achieved? Is this even possible?

They question your ambition. They question your experience. They question your vision. That is their choice.
Sometimes these questions are genuine. However, more often, than not, they come from people who doubt your capability, question your judgment, or simply cannot see beyond conventional thinking. Their “Why?” is not curiosity. It is scepticism. It is disbelief. It is an attempt—conscious or unconscious—to make you question yourself.

How Great Leaders Respond. Many promising careers have ended because people allowed someone else’s “Why?” to become their own inner voice. Great leaders, however, respond differently. Don’t argue. Don’t seek their approval. Smile, prepare relentlessly and answer with your actions.

Opening New Possibilities. Simply ask yourself : “Why not?” Why not me? Why not now? Why not this idea? Why not challenge the impossible? That single question transforms doubt into determination. It shifts the focus from limitations to possibilities.
Throughout history, every extraordinary achievement was once dismissed as unrealistic. The entrepreneur was told the business would fail. The athlete was told the record could not be broken. The scientist was told the theory would never work. The military commander was told the objective was impossible.

Dogged Determination. Yet every breakthrough began, because someone refused to accept the world’s “Why?” and chose to believe in “Why not?” Not recklessly, but confidently. Not blindly, but with preparation. Not arrogantly, but with conviction.
As a military leader, I have learned that every difficult mission begins with reasons why it cannot be done—limited resources, difficult terrain, uncertain intelligence, and overwhelming odds. If commanders accepted every “Why?”, missions would never begin. Leadership demands the courage to ask, “Why not?”

Universal Application. This principle applies equally in boardrooms, classrooms, hospitals, start-ups, and families. Your choice is deciding which question will define your future. Will you live by their “Why?” Or will you build your life around your own “Why not?”
Because history rarely remembers those who explained why something couldn’t be done. It remembers those who proved that it could.
The future does not belong to those who merely understand the world. It belongs to those courageous enough to reimagine it.

Leadership Challenge: Today, identify one assumption that has governed your work, your team, or your life for years. Instead of asking, “Why is it this way?”, ask, “Why not make it better?” That simple question may become the beginning of your next breakthrough.
The Wright brothers asked, “Why not fly?”. Space explorers asked, “Why not reach the Moon?”
Entrepreneurs ask, “Why not disrupt an industry?”. Military leaders ask, “Why not outthink the adversary rather than merely outfight him?”
Every major leap in human progress began with someone who dared to ask “Why not?”

Why Great Leaders Master Their Minds Before They Lead Others

Leadership begins with leading oneself. Whether commanding troops on the battlefield, leading an organisation, or making important decisions in everyday life, mastering the mind is the hallmark of exceptional leadership.

On International Yoga Day 2026, we celebrate yoga not merely as a form of physical exercise, but as a powerful discipline for developing mental strength, emotional balance, and self-mastery.

The ancient sage Patanjali defined yoga in the Yoga Sutras as:

“Yogaḥ Citta-Vṛtti-Nirodhaḥ”
Yoga is the stilling of the fluctuations of the mind.

This timeless wisdom holds immense relevance for leaders today.

How Yoga Builds Leadership

Self-Awareness: Yoga teaches us to observe our thoughts and emotions before reacting. Self-aware leaders make wiser decisions and inspire greater trust.

Mental Focus: In a world filled with distractions, yoga strengthens concentration, enabling leaders to think clearly and prioritise effectively.

Emotional Balance: Through breathing techniques, meditation, and mindful movement, yoga helps regulate emotions and remain calm under pressure.

Discipline: Progress in yoga comes through regular practice. Likewise, leadership excellence is built on consistent habits rather than occasional inspiration.

Resilience: Yoga teaches acceptance without surrender. It helps us recover from setbacks, adapt to change, and move forward with renewed determination.

Humility: By reducing ego and encouraging service before self, yoga nurtures one of the most respected qualities in leadership.
A Leader’s Perspective

During military operations, uncertainty, fatigue, and rapidly changing situations are constant. The difference between panic and composed action often lies in one’s ability to control the mind.

The same is true in business, public service, healthcare, education, and everyday life. Leaders who remain calm, focused, disciplined, and resilient inspire confidence and guide others through uncertainty. Yoga develops precisely these qualities.

Conclusion

As we celebrate International Yoga Day, let us remember that yoga is far more than a fitness routine. It is a lifelong practice of mastering ourselves before attempting to lead others.

As I often say:

“The greatest battlefield is not on the border; it is within our own minds. A person who conquers fear, anger, distraction, and ego becomes capable of leading others with wisdom. That is why yoga is not merely an exercise—it is leadership training for life.”

Jai Hind.

The Hidden Key to Peak Performance

Every year, millions of students over years of hard, prepare for competitive examinations. Yet, on the day of the exam, success depends not only on knowledge gained, but also on the temperament displayed in those crucial three hours of exams.

Exam temperament is the ability to remain calm, composed, and focused under pressure. It is the difference between reacting emotionally and responding intelligently, which can lead to below par performance and stupendous success, respectfully..

As a soldier learns before every mission, preparation builds confidence, but composure wins the battle.

A student who panics after encountering a difficult question often loses valuable time and confidence. On the other hand, a student who stays calm, skips the difficult question temporarily, and continues answering others is more likely to maximise their score.

A Few Simple Principles that Can Help. Trust your preparation and read every question carefully. Manage your time wisely. Don’t allow one difficult question to affect the rest of your paper. Breathe deeply whenever you feel anxious. Stay focused on the present question—not on the final result.

These habits are not only useful in examinations; they are essential qualities of successful leaders. Whether on the battlefield, in the boardroom, or in the examination hall, those who remain calm under pressure consistently make better decisions and perform at their best.

Remember, an examination is not merely a test of knowledge—it is also a test of character and composure.

A cool mind delivers peak performance. Master your mind, and success will follow.
